What I treat
Six kinds of trouble, one careful pair of hands.
Every clinic day begins the same way: a dilated look at the whole eye, front to back. Surgery is never the first answer — but when it is the right one, it happens here, with the same surgeon who examined you.
LASIK & refractive surgery
Spectacle freedom, assessed honestly. Corneal topography and dry-eye screening come first; about one in five people is told, kindly, that glasses remain the better answer.
Glaucoma
The disease that steals sight without a warning shot. Pressure control, visual-field tracking and OCT nerve imaging, reviewed against your own baseline — not a textbook average.
Retina & diabetic eye care
If you live with diabetes, your retina is the one organ a doctor can watch directly. Annual imaging, laser when needed, and anti-VEGF injections given without drama.
Children & squint
Amblyopia has a closing window. Cycloplegic refraction, patching plans a child will actually follow, and squint surgery timed for school holidays wherever possible.
Dry eye & cornea
Screens, air-conditioning and contact lenses have made this the most common complaint in the clinic — and the most commonly dismissed. It is treatable. Bring your eye drops.
Through their eyes
This is the hardest thing to explain in words.
Families often arrive convinced their mother is simply being careless. She is not — she is looking at the world below. Pick a condition and watch the same afternoon change.
Healthy vision
The reference picture
Crisp edges, honest colour, a full field of view, and a sign you can read from across the courtyard. Everything that follows is a departure from this.
- A dilated examination takes about forty minutes.
- Even with perfect sight, one baseline scan in your forties is worth having.
Uncorrected myopia
Correctable today
Nothing is damaged — the eye is simply focusing in front of the retina. Glasses fix it in a minute; LASIK or an implantable lens can fix it for good, if the cornea agrees.
- Half the world is expected to be short-sighted by 2050.
- Suitability for LASIK is decided by corneal thickness and tear film, not by ambition.
Cataract
Reversible — almost always
The natural lens clouds and yellows. Colours dull, headlights bloom into stars, and reading needs ever more lamp. It is not a film that can be peeled off; the lens is replaced.
- Surgery is day care and typically takes twelve to twenty minutes.
- Most patients read a newspaper the next morning.
- Waiting for it to “ripen” is advice from another era.
Glaucoma
Preventable — not reversible
The optic nerve is damaged from the outside in. The brain fills the missing edges so convincingly that most people notice nothing until half the field is gone. Sight lost here does not come back.
- Screening from age 40, or from 35 with a family history.
- Drops, laser or surgery can hold the disease where it is.
Diabetic retinopathy
Silent until it is not
Leaking vessels bleed into the gel of the eye, dropping ink-blots across the picture. Sugar control is the treatment; laser and injections are the rescue.
- An annual retinal check from the day of diagnosis, sight or no sight complaints.
- Early treatment prevents the great majority of severe loss.
Age-related macular degeneration
Central vision under threat
The periphery stays sharp while the middle of the world smudges away: faces lose their features, lines on a grid begin to bend. Detection speed decides the outcome.
- Check an Amsler grid at home — one eye at a time, weekly.
- Wet AMD is treatable with injections; timing matters in weeks, not months.
These are illustrations drawn for understanding, not diagnostic tools. Real disease is rarely this tidy, and no website can tell you what is happening inside your eye. If something has changed in your sight, be examined — here or anywhere.

I became an eye surgeon because of a bus timetable.
My grandmother stopped travelling in her seventies. We assumed it was her knees. It was a cataract that had been ripening for four years, and it took twenty minutes to remove. The morning after her surgery she read the departure board at Charbagh station out loud, to nobody in particular, and then wept.
Most sight loss in this country is like that: quiet, gradual, and entirely preventable. The medicine is not the hard part. Getting people through the door in time — and making the explanation clear enough that they come back for the follow-up — is the hard part. That is what this clinic is built around.
Outside theatre I run a free monthly screening camp in Malihabad, teach the second-year residents at the state medical college, and lose consistently at badminton to my daughter.

Before you come in
Questions I answer every single day.
Will my eyes be dilated? Can I drive home?
Assume yes to the first and no to the second. Dilating drops blur near vision and make light uncomfortable for four to six hours. Bring sunglasses and someone to drive, or plan on a taxi.
How long does cataract surgery actually take?
Twelve to twenty minutes of operating, and roughly three hours at the centre from arrival to discharge. You walk in and you walk out. Only the eye is anaesthetised — you stay awake, and you will be talked through it.
Am I a candidate for LASIK?
Probably, if you are over 21, your prescription has been stable for a year, your corneas are thick enough and your tear film is healthy. About one in five people who ask are better served by an implantable lens or by keeping their glasses. The scans decide, not the sales pitch.
My child squints only when tired. Does that still need checking?
Yes, and sooner rather than later. An intermittent squint is how many amblyopias begin, and the brain’s window for correction narrows sharply after the age of seven.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Your current glasses and contact lenses, every eye drop and tablet you take (the boxes, not a list from memory), any previous eye records or scans, and your sugar and blood-pressure readings if you have them.
Do you see patients through insurance or government schemes?
Yes — most major insurers and the state health scheme are accepted for surgical procedures. Call the front desk with your policy number before booking and we will confirm the pre-authorisation in writing.
